Joshua graduated with his Bachelor’s degree in Health Science from Idaho State University in 2018. He has since returned to school to round out his education with the ultimate aspiration to achieve a career in nursing, a pursuit that affords him the opportunity to continue working in the community of Pocatello he has called home for nearly eight years. As a case manager, Joshua works at Gateway to assist others in moving through difficult or new circumstances with his priorities being that every client achieve a safe and stable living environment, that their dietary needs are sufficiently met, and are adequately provided for in essentials such as clothing and self-care.
Joshua has a long history of working in the behavioral health field. He started as a behavioral health paraprofessional at the Anasazi Foundation, the very first Wilderness Therapy program that pioneered the field, and thoroughly enjoyed walking with Young Walkers (ages 12 to 18) and Sinagua (18+) while modeling the principles of a Heart at Peace and gently inviting a change in way of being. After graduating from Idaho State University, Joshua began working with the Idaho Department of Corrections, first as a correctional officer at Pocatello Women’s Correctional Center, and then as a Felony Probation and Parole Officer. As a PPO, Joshua worked extensively with the Bannock County Wood Court, a treatment court meant for clients working through both substance use disorders and mental health concerns. His goal was to utilize the principles of gently inviting change in clients while still holding them accountable to the standards and obligations of the Wood Court.
Joshua believes in a philosophy centered around natural consequences acting as the best teacher, but also places high value on a purposeful change in milieu to include improving diet, sleep hygiene, maintaining positive associations, and meaningful balance in work, home, and social spheres. He is trained in motivational interviewing, conflict de-escalation, and currently facilitates an early recovery Skills Training and Development group.
In his free time, Joshua enjoys spending time with his family, competitive and creative gaming, and following along with Bob Ross in the series, The Joy of Painting.
